The Spyder likes the higher revs (as do I) and shifting the manual is obviously not as fast. I found my self shifting with the paddles fairly early in the rev range.

The CS was loaded with torque at about 2k from what I remember and it was continuous with the transmission’s instant shifts. The PDK changes the comparison in my mind. I bought the manual Spyder knowing it is not as quick as the PDK CS is. That’s a tough question to answer as the power delivery is so different. We should also remember a convertible is not as stiff as a coupe and therefore road impacts have a chance to sort of fizzle out more on a convertible than on a fixed-roof way-stiffer car. I have read that Porsche engineers gave specific tuning to the Spyder’s suspension to make it a bit more road-friendly whereas the GT4 is firmer (even though both cars share “the same” suspension), so maybe that’s why the ride felt surprisingly good. Don’t know why my test drive of the Spyder didn’t cause me to think the ride was excessively firm. The Spyder and GT4 cars have the -30mm suspension, so that’s -10 more even than the Sport PASM. I test drove the Sport PASM GTS 4.0 Cayman and I observed the highway handling was too firm and firmer than necessary.ĭifficult to compare Cayman GTS 4.0 against Spyder, but I’m trying. I can say for sure there is a substantial difference in ride comfort between the -10mm PASM and the standard -20 Sport PASM on the GTS 4.0 Cayman models. I ordered my 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 with the option for the regular Porsche Active Suspension Management (so that’s -10mm ride height from normal). But I drove on back roads and not on the highway. If I had to choose between keeping my 2016 981 Spyder and my 2017 911 Carrera S Cabriolet (6spd and highly loaded), the Spyder would be the choice every time - and I do love my 2017 Carrera S Cab.Ĭlick to expand.I was expecting the 718 Spyder to ride excessively firm for my taste, but it didn’t. For me, the sensation of speed is often most important. If you want the prestige, practicality, and raw speed of a 911, then the 911 is never a bad option. Driving B roads in the Spyder is nothing short of wonderful.

You will love the upgrade over your base Boxster. If not the Spyder, then the Boxster GTS 4.0 for sure. If you want the naturally aspirated feeling, go with either a 981 or 982 Spyder. It’s subdued in its volume because of the emerging sound regulations, and its sound is shared with 3 other variants. The 718 Spyder sounds nice, but it is not special. No other car in Porsche’s lineup sounds like those cars. The 981 Spyder has a bespoke exhaust sound unique to the 981 Spyder and GT4 for this reason the 981 Spyder and GT4 are just special. This is a long story but I will compress it down to this: the 2016 981 Spyder sounds far and way so much better than the 718 Spyder. On the day before, I test drove a 718 Spyder. I just took delivery yesterday of a 2021 Cayman GTS 4.0. You feel connected with the car you are the car’s caretaker. The car has a very low center of gravity as a result of the weight savings and the operation to open and close the top is not only easy but it’s kind of fun. It’s not a big deal, it’s not a stupid design, it’s not a stupid top, it’s not frustrating, etc. Once, when I was on the highway and I pulled over to close the top in a hurry because I underestimated the cold weather and the wind, I scurried along and performed that procedure in about 20 seconds total. The procedure to put the top up or down takes about a 50 seconds for the experienced user.

I’m not sure which other OEM tire is supplied- I think Pirelli- and I am a fan of not one variant of Pirelli tires (except their winter series tires which don’t apply here). Honorable mention would be Continental ExtremeContact Sport.

My pick and the pick of most tire people and auto journalists is Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, which is one of the OEM tires supplied by Porsche on the GTS 4.0 and Spyder (on the Spyder when the option is selected for high performance summer tires as a downgrade from the Michelin Cup 2 tires). Naturally, performance of the vehicle in the rain would be directly related to the type of tire on the vehicle and the remaining tread. When driving with the top up, Porsche says the car can safely proceed to the vehicle’s top speed, which I believe is 183 mph. It might be a bit louder in the rain since there is no insulation under the top, but I don’t know of any fabric top that doesn’t exhibit that tap tap tap noise in the rain. The Spyder top is a fully functioning waterproof top and will perform like any other modern convertible in the rain. The 718 Spyder top features absolutely no changes. The 982 (or 718) Spyder has the exact same top as the 2016 981 Spyder. I have a 2016 Boxster Spyder and love it.
